Challenge
Cutting CO₂ from transport is a priority for Stena Recycling, and testing new solutions is part of how they get there. Solar’s potential to reduce fuel and CO2 emissions as they transition from diesel to electric trucks made it an attractive solution to pilot.
Solution
Solar was selected as one of the initiatives for testing. Stena Recycling fit three recycling trucks with Green Energy 285 Wp solar systems, as part of a six-month pilot. The systems feed the trucks’ electrical systems directly, so the engine and alternator work less to power onboard equipment – meaning less diesel burned.
Reliable power, lower fuel use
Recycling trucks are especially demanding on the electrical system, with heavy power take-off (PTO) use for lifting and compacting. Solar helps keep the batteries reliably charged, while easing the load on the engine.
