Solar is now a key part of Schröer Transporte’s fleet. By using CO₂-neutral energy, they’re extending battery life, reducing fuel use and cutting idling. Drivers enjoy longer runtime on comfort systems, and the company sees around 0.8 L/100 km in savings. It’s a solution they plan to install on all vehicles and happily recommend to others.

A family-run transport company focused on reliability and efficiency

Heinz Schröer Transporte has been delivering reliable freight forwarding services across Germany and Europe since 1971. The family business, now managed by André Schröer in its second generation, employs 35 people and specialises in the transport of partial and full loads and hazardous goods transport on regular routes to France, Spain and the Benelux region — including return loads to Germany.

Their fleet includes 25 DAF, Volvo and MAN tractor units, semi-trailers from Krone and Fliegl, 25 coil liners, Megaliners designed for beverage logistics, and special trailers such as a Cityliner with tail lift and a forced-steering model.

To ensure maximum uptime, the company also runs its own in-house workshop.

Why Schröer Transporte chose Green Energy

For Schröer Transporte, the decision to introduce solar was driven by a clear goal:
using CO₂-neutral energy to extend battery life and reduce fuel consumption.

As Christian Overkämping explains:
“We can use CO₂-neutral energy to extend battery life and save fuel at the same time.”

Other reasons for choosing Green Energy systems included:

  • High flexibility and robust design of the CIGS panels
  • Simple installation and user-friendly operation
  • Stronger alignment with the company’s sustainability goals
  • A desire to “move with the times” and adopt technology that reduces CO₂ while cutting operating costs

Fuel savings, longer battery life, less idling

Since installing the Green Energy systems, the company has seen measurable improvements across the fleet:

Operational and economic benefits:

  • Longer battery life
  • Lower idling times, reducing wear and tear and fuel consumption
  • Fuel savings of around 0.8 litres per 100 km
  • Reduced alternator load, further improving efficiency
  • No more battery failures, thanks to reliable system monitoring.

Happier drivers:

Beyond that, it’s made their drivers’ working life much better.

“Our drivers are delighted,” says Christian. “They can use the onboard systems much longer without switching things off. And we see clear fuel savings because the trucks don’t need to idle as much.”

  • Stationary air conditioning runs significantly longer
  • Refrigerators, auxiliary heating, and cooling systems can operate for extended periods
  • In-cab entertainment (TV, etc.) can be used longer without compromising battery performance
  • Overall higher driver comfort and fewer interruptions

Solar on all vehicles

For Schröer Transporte, the next steps are clear:

“The future will see Green Energy panels installed on all our vehicles,” Christian concludes. “This helps us reduce CO₂ emissions and fuel consumption, while increasing battery life. We absolutely recommend the solar panels to other companies — we were and remain convinced of this product.”

About Green Energy

At Green Energy, we believe sustainability should be practical, measurable, and accessible. Our flexible, ultra-thin CIGS solar panels can be mounted directly on vehicle roofs, work even in partial shade, and are highly resistant to shock and vibration – making them perfect for the demanding conditions of the transport sector.

With our in-house developed Fleet Tracker system, companies can also document their energy production, CO₂ savings, and fuel reductions – ready for ESG reporting.

Explore more of the benefits of CIGS Solar Panels

The CIGS solar panel is often recognised on its slim profile, its flexibility and its low weight. CIGS solar panels are better than conventional solar panels in almost every aspect, when it comes to sustainability efforts and especially durability.
