The fuel efficiency edge transforming long-haul fleets and why it should be on your radar

fuel efficiency

Every fleet manager knows the feeling: you’ve trained your drivers, capped cruising speeds, invested in tyres and aerodynamics. You’ve done the things everyone says to do. Yet the fuel bill keeps climbing…

What if there was a lever that quietly chipped away at diesel use every single day – while your trucks are driving or standing still?

That lever is already on the radar of leading operators in Europe, but it remains one of the least used:  photovoltaic (PV) roof modules, solar panels designed for heavy trucks.

Benchmarking against the big levers

A recent benchmark study across Germany, Austria and Switzerland looked at the ten most effective measures to cut fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions in longhaul transport. The rankings are familiar to most operators but they also reveal where untapped potential still lies:

MeasureBenefits
Speed caps and predictive cruise~10% savings
Eco driving training 5-10% savings
Low rolling resistance tyres and pressure management 3-5% savings
Aerodynamic kits ~5% savings
Telematics and feedback An enabler across measures
Logistics optimisation Route dependent
Idling and auxiliary load management Weather and site dependent
High capacity vehicles (25 m) 15–25 % per tonne km
Solar roof panels ≈1 L saved per 100 km

Most fleets have already invested heavily in the top measures. Driver behaviour, tyres, aerodynamics – these are almost hygiene factors by now.

The untapped opportunity

Solar came in ninth on the ranking, not because they lack value, but because adoption is still in its early stages. Yet they offer something unique that none of the other levers can claim: They work even when the truck is parked.

  • A truck idling to power HVAC, lights or onboard electronics is burning fuel for no movement.
  • A truck fitted with advanced CIGS solar taps into free energy from the sun to support those auxiliary loads, keeping batteries charged and reducing alternator drag.
  • The result: fewer dead batteries, less idling, and measurable diesel savings that accumulate silently in the background.

PV doesn’t just optimise what’s happening on the road, it transforms what happens off it.

Solar has evolved and it’s ready for heavy transport

A few years ago, adding solar to a truck roof might have seemed like a sustainability gimmick. Some fleet operators may think, “We looked at solar a few years back and the results were underwhelming.”  That’s understandable – earlier solutions typically used rigid crystalline panels that were heavy, prone to damage, and not well suited to the realities of long-haul transport.

The landscape has changed. Advanced glass-free CIGS solar technology is lighter, more resilient, and designed to handle tough road conditions. Combined with smarter charge controllers and IoT-enabled monitoring, these systems make it far easier to see what’s being generated and how it contributes to reducing auxiliary load on the alternator.

Lightweight and flexible solar modules are purpose designed for commercial vehicles. They integrate seamlessly, add minimal weight, and deliver fuel savings in the range of 1 litre per 100 km driven – savings that scale fleetwide. And because they operate passively, there’s no driver training needed, no maintenance, no behavioural drift, no route dependency. PV simply works, day after day, in the background.

Why it matters now

Fuel is still one of your biggest costs. Most levers to reduce it have been pulled already – and their returns are plateauing. That’s why innovators are looking beyond the well trodden measures to find the next layer of efficiency.

Solar is not about replacing what you already do well. It’s about adding a new dimension to your efficiency strategy – one that turns roof space into an asset rather than dead weight.

When you invest in tyres or training, you’re keeping pace with your peers.
When you invest in solar, you’re stepping ahead of them.

You’re not just meeting sustainability targets; you’re finding savings in a place most operators aren’t even looking. That’s how industry leaders are made.

You’ve pushed every fuel efficiency lever you have at your disposal. Here’s your chance to unlock a new source of savings – without asking your team to change a thing.
